What a night! The 88th Academy Awards were held on Sunday, February 28th, and they began with a poignant monologue from Chris Rock during which he addressed the #OscarsSoWhite movement and the subject of diversity in Hollywood. As the night progressed, there were a few upsets, a few surprised, a few jokes that didn’t quite land, and few nominees who finally got their due.

The Best Supporting Actress award, which remained a tight race throughout awards season, went to The Danish Girl’s Alicia Vikander, while Best Support Actor went to Mark Rylance for Bridge of Spies. The Best Actress and Best Actor went rather predictably to Brie Larson for Room and Leonardo DiCaprio for The Revenant–the former, of course, being a long-time favorite after earning multiple nominations over his but never bringing home the statue.

Of the eight Best Picture nominees, the race had essentially come down to three films: The Big Short, Spotlight, and The Revenant. The Big Short won Best Adapated Screenplay and Spotlight took home Best Original Screenplay early in the night, while The Revenant saw Alejandro Inarritu win Best for the second year in a row. This made the final award of the night all the more suspenseful, and there was an audible moment of surprise in the room when Morgan Freeman announced Tom McCarthy’s Spotlight as the Best Picture of the Year.
