With the Academy Awards nominations being revealed this week, any new critical attention a film can garner ahead of voting is more than welcome, and this year’s London Film Critics’ Awards definitely spread the wealth. There were the winners we expected like Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea, and the British period film Love & Friendship, and there were some surprises. Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake and foreign film Toni Erdmann both took home statues, and while La La Land won Film of the Year, it lost out in its other categories. Meanwhile, Isabelle Huppert continues to pick up steam with a Best Actress win and the Dilys Powell Award.
