William Monahan, who won an Academy Award for his screenplay for The Departed, has been tapped to write the script for Paramount’s Evel Knievel biopic, based on the book by Sheldon Saltman EVEL KNIEVEL ON TOUR published in 1977. The Sopranos alum and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter will produce along with Rachel Winter and LBI Entertainment.
The involvement of both Monahan and Winter has led to speculation that director Martin Scorcese, who worked with the former on Departed and the latter on Empire and The Wolf of Wall Street, might come on board to helm the pic. At this point, however, it’s purely a rumor, as there’s been no word from either Paramount or Scorcese’s camp that such an offer has even been made.
A film based on the iconic stuntman’s life has been in the works for some time, with various studios putting different projects in development. Darren Aronofsky is currently attached to direct a Knievel biopic for Sony, with Channing Tatum eyed for the lead, but that film has been put on hold while Aronofsky focuses on a project starring Jennifer Lawrence. Aronofsky takes over directing duties from Peter Berg, who left the project earlier this year.
Monahan is repped by CAA.
