After making his directorial debut on The Duff, is heading back to high school for Universal’s . Sandel is in talks to helm the feature adaptation of the mega-popular Mattel toy line, which has been in since 2009.

The female-skewing series focuses on the teenage offspring of all the iconic monsters, including Dracula, the Wolfman, Frankenstein’s monster, the Mummy, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon, experiencing all of the usual drama, heartaches, and excitements of high school. Though it began as a doll line, the property has since expanded into a hefty multimedia franchise with animated films, apps, games, and more.

Mattel’s Playground Productions is executive producing, while the film’s most recent scribes – Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage – will produce under their Fake Empire banner.

Sandel is an inspired choice for Monster High, as the emerging director has demonstrated the perfect touch for balancing high school-age material on multiple occasions. Though he made his feature directorial debut with CBS The Duff, the adaptation of the YA novel by Kody Keplinger, he also directed Aim High, the McG-produced web series about a teen sleuth.

Before he tackles Monster High, he’ll first reunite with CBS for the adult comedy Preconception, based on a script from scribes Jake Morse and Scott Wolman.
