It was bittersweet to see the cast and creatives of FX’s THE AMERICANS at winter TCA as it was the show’s final press tour.
Executive producers and expert secret-keepers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields and cast members Matthew Rhys, Keri Russell, Holly Taylor, Keidrich Sellati and Costa Ronin fielded a final round of questions about Season 6 without giving any explicit details about the season.
Weisberg and Fields said they stuck pretty close to the master document they created in season two of the show but acknowledged, “there are surprises and things can change.”
Look for a time jump to the late 1980s, which was needed so the story could include Mikhail Gorbachev, who became a key figure in Russian history. However, do not expect to see Vladimir Putin pop up as a character.
Weisberg and Fields also revealed they do not have any spinoff ideas in mind but joked about one for Henry, who Weisberg said, “he inherited Philip’s American side. Paige got Elizabeth’s Russian soul.”
Also expect more hits of the ‘80s on the show’s soundtrack as Fields said, “Consciously or unconsciously, we wrote more silent sequences and let the actors play,” while Weisberg confessed, “Or we may have gotten drunk and spent too much money on the premiere.”
Russell said that since they’re only halfway through production of the season, there hasn’t been much time for reflection but did say of the show, “It’s one of my favorite marriage stories. Playing Elizabeth has been a fabulous feminist role. It’s a rare girl part. I’m happy it’s ending on such a high note. It’s been a great ride.”
“The Americans” final season kicks off March 28th on FX.
