After milking the science fiction genre to great success, Netflix are getting into the Western business with the new limited series Godless from creator/director Scott Frank, partnering with producer Steven Soderbergh, who directed Frank’s Oscar-nominated adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Out of Sight nearly twenty years back.
Since being nominated for that Oscar, Frank has taken on a number of projects including the screenplay for James Mangold’s recent Wolverine movie Logan, said to be Hugh Jackman’s last stand in the role, as well as its predecessor The Wolverine. Frank also adapted and directed the crime-thriller A Walk Among the Tombstones from Lawrence Block’s novel in which Liam Neeson starred.
Frank’s new show Godless stars Jeff Daniels as notorious criminal Frank Griffin, who is on a mission of revenge with his gang of outlaws against Jack O’Connell’s Roy Goode, Frank’s protégé, who betrayed the brotherhood. Roy seeks refuge with outcast Alice Fletcher (Michelle Dockery) in a mining town in La Belle, NM that’s run by women, and when they learn Griffin is heading to La Bell, they band together to defend the town.
All seven episodes of the Western limited series are directed by Frank, and they will premiere on Netflix starting Nov. 22.
