Streaming giant Netflix is close to landing THE HELICOPTER HEIST, an upcoming film based on an unpublished manuscript of the same name by Jonas Bonnier. Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star and produce with his Nine Stories Production banner alongside his partner Riva Marker. Bonnier and his publishing agent Niclas Salomonsson will executive produce.
The project is based on the real-life story of the 2009 Västberga helicopter robbery when a group of robbers used a stolen Bell 206 Jet Ranger to steal over $5 million from a G4S cash service depot in Stockholm, Sweden. Seven robbers were eventually caught and sentenced, but not after planting decoy bombs to throw off the police.
If Netflix is able to land the project, it will be the latest in a string of star-studded films at the studio. On the docket they also have War Machine, directed by David Michod and starring Brad Pitt, and Bright, directed by David Ayer and starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton.
Bonnier is a seven-time novelist and served as president of the Bonnier Group from 2008 to 2013.
Gyllenhaal most recently appeared in Southpaw, Everest, and Demolition. He is also starring in Tom Ford’s upcoming film Nocturnal Animals alongside Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
He is repped by WME.
