The Lonely Island & Judd Apatow’s “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” To Bow June 3rd



After a summer of teasing fans via social media, comedy trio The Lonely Island have finally announced the film they spend their summer vacation putting together: .

The film will star as a rapper whose album bombs and leaves him with little choice other than to reform his old boy band. Fellow SNL alum Tim Meadows will also star as Samberg’s overworked but constantly upbeat manager.

The Lonely Island, made up of Samberg, , and , wrote the project and produce alongside . Schaffer and Taccone co-directed the feature comedy.

have set the movie to bow June 3rd, the same weekend as romantic drama Me Before You and Paramount’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Along with the premiere date, the also released the film’s first poster (see below).

The trio met in high school and formed as Lonely Island in 2001 where they began making absurdist short films. After a recommendation to Lorne Michaels from Jimmy Fallon, the three joined Saturday Night Live with Samberg as a performer while Schaffer and Taccone were hired as . They became infamous for their “Digital Shorts” including “Lazy Sunday” and “I’m On A Boat”. They have also released three music-comedy albums and previously created the feature comedy Hot Rod, starring Samberg, Taccone, and Bill Hader, in 2007. Samberg can currently be seen on Fox’s sitcom Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
