THE MICK opens with Mickey succumbing to the pressures of motherhood by eating in the toilet part of the bathroom as the kids fight noisily in the background. When the kids discover her hiding spot, Mickey tries to explain that like every mom meme on the internet, she considers the bathroom her final retreat from the world. When Ben enters to show off his science project, Mickey realizes that the kid is using gambling chips for planets, she immediately takes off for the casino. And so Alba is in charge when Jimmy reveals that Mickey has a gambling problem but that he can’t stop her—it’s up to Alba, which means that Sabrina is in charge at home.
This episode is faster paced than most, which allows for some comic effect although I rarely find the show especially clever or unique. Instead, the comedy tends to be a new version of an old story. So with Sabrina in charge, she’s going to find some tricky way of keeping a tight leash on Ben, her primary charge. And so she ties him to her bed, using a dog leash. And Ben has to poop, the signature line of the episode uttered in his little kid voice and rehashed over the closing credit. Because it really is as clever a line as the show gets. Jimmy has been fighting for a position of power and so he lets Ben loose and chaos ensues when Sabrina discovers Ben is missing. As Sabrina and Chip search for the missing Ben, there is a mildly amusing montage as they look all over the house, including the ovens and a teepee holding a creepy character. And of course, although Jimmy has Ben carefully tucked away in a spacious closet, Ben has escaped because he has discovered more gambling chips.
Meanwhile, Mickey is delving headfirst into her gambling addiction at the casino. Mickey has rituals for everything and when Alba shows up to bring her home, it turns out that Alba has all the luck at the tables and wins a comped room. And they don’t call to check in on the kids because Mickey is very good at giving up her responsibility. It’s not until the very end, when Mickey’s last chip gets sucked into a vacuum cleaner that she is forced to leave. Alba has already been kicked out for trying to get Mickey to stop gambling. And then adorable little Ben arrives, with his father’s blazer on and his chips in tow. Alba and Ben present Mickey with an ultimatum to go home with them or to continue gambling and of course Mickey chooses gambling—even a dramatic pause and a cute little kid can’t stop Mickey from being Mickey. Did anyone really think that Mickey was going to go home? And why should she? There are plenty of chips left and Alba is back in charge of Ben so it’s really the only rational thing to do
Which Mickey proves by showing up at the house later with a giant stretch limo decked out with money hanging from the ceiling as a replacement for Ben’s diorama project. Later, Mickey and Alba will debate the takeaway from Mickey’s adventures and after admitting just wanting some space from the kids, it turns out that there really isn’t one. Which holds true for every episode of The Mick. Despite elaborate reveals and a lot of high-pitched fast talking, everything we needed to know about Mickey, the kids, and their life together was revealed on the first episode or two. And everything else is just a rehash with varying degrees of amusement.
