The Must-Stream Movies and Shows New on Netflix in March

Netflix is celebrating the dawn of spring with a fresh infusion of content, both classic and original. Classic comedies, enthralling docs, and long-awaited shows are just part of updated menu that subscribers will be able to enjoy. With Blazing Saddles, Marvel’s Iron Fist, and This Is Spinal Tap, the streaming giant is giving us all a great excuse not to get out and enjoy that extra hour of sunlight.

Here’s a few of our must-stream movies and shows coming to Netflix in December, and don’t forget to check out the complete list of new additions below!

Blazing Saddles (1974) – March 1

The best single piece of content coming to Netflix this month is undoubtedly Mel Brooks’ 1974 classic Blazing Saddles. Training his expert eye on the Old West, Brooks constructs both a brilliant satire of the Western as well as one of the best films in the genre. Cleavon Little is the epitome of charm as Sheriff Bart while Gene Wilder is a serial scene-stealer as partially retired gunslinger “the Waco Kid.” Harvey Korman and Madeline Kahn also deliver memorable performances as the dastardly Hedley Lamarr and the hysterically outrageous Lili von Shtupp, respectfully. Through his talented cast, Brooks delivers a timeless parody that takes aim at the flaws, contradictions, and downright perplexities of the Old West.

Memento (2000) – March 1

Okay. You’re gonna need a notebook or something for this one. Christopher Nolan’s breakout film is a layered exploration of the mind of an anterograde amnesiac told in a non-linear method that results in the viewer starting to think that they’re suffering from the same ailment as the protagonist. It is rare that a film is able to fully transport a character’s mental state into the mind of the viewer, but Nolan pulls it off in a feat of filmmaking. Using such a convoluted narrative technique could have spelled doom if the film were not so expertly plotted, making it a challenging yet not impossible experience. Memento is also notable for being Nolan’s first collaboration with cinematographer Wally Pfister, whom he would later work with on the Dark Knight Trilogy, The Prestige, and Inception.

Rolling Stones: Crossfire Hurricane (2012) – March 1

Brett Morgan’s (Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck) 2012 doc puts us in the way back machine and takes us to a place before the Stones were periodically touring septuagenarians and when they were “The World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band.” (Yes, that was a self-bestowed moniker.) The film follows the Stones for the first twenty years of their career, from fresh-faced London teenagers with a penchant for rhythm and blues to grizzled rock n’ roll veterans. For anyone with an appreciation of the groundbreaking and innovative work of the Stones, Crossfire Hurricane is a must-see.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984) – March 1

Speaking of the Stones, they must have been one of the main influences for the cringeworthy pomposity of everyone’s favorite fake rock band. In the same way Mel Brooks satirized the Old West with Blazing Saddles, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Harry Shearer, and Rob Reiner trained their comedic scalpels on the overblown world of hard rock and hair metal for their seminal comedy This Is Spinal Tap. Guest, McKean, and Shearer play the core members of the rapidly declining English rock band Spinal Tap, who are handling their sprint to obscurity with anything but grace. The band embodies every cliche of the rich, vain rock star and the film skewers their self-absorbed pomposity with glee.

Marvel’s Iron Fist: Season 1 (Netflix Original) – March 17

Are you excited for the introduction of the final Defender? Don’t worry, you’re not alone if your reaction was a shrug. Iron Fist just hasn’t generated nearly the same excitement as Netflix’s other Marvel properties and the recent outpouring of negative reviews doesn’t bode well. It doesn’t seem like Iron Fist will pack the same emotional and cultural resonance as the other three Defenders, but Netflix and Marvel have each proven the ability to provide pleasant surprises with their content. At the very least, with all the martial arts mayhem promised in the trailers, Iron Fist will serve as a semi-entertaining bridge to the highly anticipated Defenders miniseries.

Five Came Back (Netflix Original) – March 31

World War II is one the most covered events in human history. Countless films, books, television shows, essays, and articles all strive to show the event in a new way and tell a new story. With Five Came Back, executive producers Steven Spielberg, Scott Rudin, and Barry Diller tell the wartime stories of legendary Hollywood filmmakers John Ford, Frank Capra, William Wyler, John Huston, and George Stevens. Each director enlisted in the U.S. military and made a variety of films highlighting American operations against the Axis powers. Adapted from the excellent book of the same name, Five Came Back promises to provide an enthralling insight into an oft-overlooked facet of World War II.

Trailer Park Boys: Season 11 (Netflix Original) – March 31

Nearly sixteen years after their debut, the greasy boys of Sunnyvale are still making us hurt with laughter. After the sublime special miniseries Out of Europe, Trailer Park Boys is returning for a proper season near the end of the month. When we last left them, Julian, Ricky, and Bubbles we dealing with the fallout from Leahy’s latest attempt at a coup d’etat as well as Trinity and Jacob’s nuptials. The tenth season also saw scene-stealing guest star appearances from Snoop Dogg, Tom Arnold, and Doug Benson, who appear as themselves as tourists to Sunnyvale. Here’s hoping that they make a return in season eleven.
