“This year, we invite you to help us say goodbye to The Originals, which begins shooting its fifth and final season on Monday,” Plec said on Twitter, noting it’s been one year since she announced the end of The Vampire Diaries, the show from which The Originals was spun off.
“It’s both a gift and a burden to be able to control the ending of a series,” Plec coninued. “Many shows are not lucky enough to have a hand in deciding when the end has come.”
The Originals was spun off of The Vampire Diaries in 2013 and stars Joseph Morgan, Daniel Gillies, Phoebe Tonkin, Charles Michael Davis, Yusuf Gatewood and Riley Voelkel.
Vampire Diaries star Candice King, whose character Caroline was revealed to have unfinished business with Morgan’s character Klaus in that show’s finale, was recently announced to be guest-starring in The Originals’ Season 5 premiere.
Plec previously teased she had ideas for another spinoff series following the end of The Originals, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “It all brings it back to what I see as a future for either The Originals or another piece of the franchise to launch off of the end of The Originals. So I look forward to being able to play around in that sandbox and see if I can make something of it.”
