Marvel Studios has three new movies out this year with Black Panther out in a couple weeks then Avengers: Infinity War coming out in early May. That doesn’t mean we should be any less excited about Marvel’s July release ANT-MAN AND THE WASP, which puts Paul Rudd back in the costume of the size-changing superhero. As you can tell from the title, Ant-Man is joined this time by the Wasp, as played by Evangeline Lilly, and Marvel has released the first trailer for Ant-Man’s newest adventure.
Ant-Man is the second Phase 2 superhero to get a sequel after last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, although there’s nothing in the trailer that points to the movie having anything to do with Avengers: Infinity War or next year’s Avengers 4.
Instead, the trailer focuses on what made Rudd’s take on the character so popular, as well as showcasing the first in-costume appearance of Ant-Man’s popular crime-fighting partner.
The 2015 movie grossed $180.2 million domestically, which is in line with the first Thor and Captain America movies. Ant-Man and the Wasp should get a nice bump coming after Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man’s appearance in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. (Personally, I love Rudd and love the comic character but wasn’t too excited about the 2015 movie.)
Rudd and Lilly are joined by Michael Douglas and Michael Peña from the first movie, as well as Bobby Cannavale, Judy Greer, Abby Ryder Fortson, Tip “T.I.” Harris and David Dastmalchian. Joining this cast for the sequel is Michelle Pfeiffer and Laurence Fishburne, along with Hannah John-Kamen, Walton Goggins and Randall Park.
Ant-Man and The Wasp is directed by Peyton Reed and produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Stephen Broussard, Charles Newirth and Stan Lee as executive producers.
The official synopsis is:
From the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes Ant-Man and The Wasp, a new chapter featuring heroes with the astonishing ability to shrink. In the aftermath of Captain America: Civil War, Scott Lang grapples with the consequences of his choices as both a super hero and a father. As he struggles to rebalance his life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, he’s confronted by Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym with an urgent new mission. Scott must once again put on the suit and learn to fight alongside the Wasp as the team works together to uncover secrets from the past.
It opens on July 6, and you can watch the trailer below.
