Rila Fukushima has been tapped to join Scarlett Johansson in DreamWorks’ version of GHOST IN THE SHELL. Show White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders is set to helm the big screen adaptation of the Manga penned by screenwriters Jonathan Herman and Jamie Moss.
The casting news comes fresh off the whitewashing controversy that Paramount was facing with the casting of Johansson in the lead role of a story that features characters who are traditionally Japanese. Fukushima, who is a Tokyo native, joins Michael Pitt and Juliette Binoche.
Ghost in the Shell follows Kusanagi (Johansson), a cyborg who is a member of a counter-cyberterrorist organization called Section 9.
In addition to being a fashion model, Fukushima is best known for her role as Yukio in 2013’s The Wolverine opposite Hugh Jackman. She also starred in the CW’s Arrow as Katana.
