THIS IS US creator Dan Fogelman is keeping much of Season 2 close to the vest, but he did reveal a few details about the NBC drama’s upcoming premiere—including a small time jump and a major clue relating to the cause of Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death.
The season premiere will pick up with siblings Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Kevin (Justin Hartley) on their 37th birthdays.
“The present-day story, which is the story of the Big Three kids, a little bit of time has passed, so we’re kind of catching up to them a month or two later in their stories on their birthday,” Fogelman said on the show’s 2017 Television Critics Association summer press tour panel.
The time jump will see Randall and his wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) attempting to adopt a child, Kate working on her singing career, and Kevin filming a new movie while working on his relationship with his ex-wife, Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge).
The past storyline, however, will pick up immediately where Jack and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) left off.
“The past story basically picks up the day after the finale, so it’s basically the morning after the big fight that has led to an early separation,” Fogelman said.
The premiere will also include a major clue relating to Jack’s cause of death, which Fogelman promised will be revealed in Season 2.
“If that is a question that is haunting people, in the course of the second season they will get all the answers about that that they need and want,” he said. “The first episode has a big, giant piece of the puzzle that will potentially set the internet abuzz but will also give some momentum to that storyline.”
This Is Us returns to NBC on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 9 p.m.
