In one of the few deals to come out of what has been a cool market in Toronto so far, EuropaCorp has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to THEIR FINEST, a World War II dramedy starring Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, Richard E. Grant, and Gemma Arterton. An Education helmer Lone Scherfig directed a script by Gay Chiappe, adapted from the novel Their Finest Hour and a Half by Lissa Evans. The script was previously featured on the 2014 Brit List.
The story centers around a group of filmmakers who struggle to make an inspirational and patriotic film to boost morale during the Blitz of London.
The film was produced by BBC Films, Amanda Posey of Wildgaze, and Elizabeth Karlsen of Number 9 Films. Christine Langan, Ed Wethered, Robert Norris, Ian Dunleavy, Peter Watson, and Zygi Kamasa are the executive producers.
While more deals are expected as the festival wraps up this weekend, only a handful have been made so far. Fox Searchlight picked up the Natalie Portman-starring Jackie after a strong response from audiences, particularly surrounding Portman’s performance, the Anne Hathaway sci-fi pic Colossal was snagged by an undisclosed Chinese buyer whose identity is expected to be revealed in the weeks ahead, and the James Gunn-scripted Belko Experiment was bought by Orion and BH Tilt.
