Tom Hanks will star in the upcoming cyber thriller, THE CIRCLE. An adaptation of the David Eggers novel of the same name, the film follows a young woman who is hired to work for an internet monopoly that specializes in controling a singular online identity for each person, rendering privacy obsolete. James Ponsoldt will write and direct the thriller for Hanks to star. Hanks will also produce under his Playtone label, along with Playtone partner Gary Goetzman.
Hanks is no stranger to the work of Eggers, having starred in the upcoming Eggers adaptation A Hologram For the King. The in-demand actor most recently starred in Captain Phillips and Saving Mr. Banks. Up next on his massive slate of forthcoming projects, he’ll star in Ithaca, Untitled Cold War Spy Thriller, and reprise his role as Robert Langdon in both The Lost Symbol and Inferno. Hanks will also produce 13 upcoming feature projects and eight television projects.
Ponsoldt gained critical acclaim for helming the indie darling The Spectacular Now, starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley. Next up, he’ll direct The End of the Tour and the Hilary Clinton biopic Rodham. He’ll also write Pippin and Pure, the latter of which he will also direct.
