Director Alfonso Gomez-Rejon has tapped another star from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to join his upcoming film THE CURRENT WAR. Spider-man: Homecoming star Tom Holland is set to join Doctor Strange‘s Benedict Cumberbatch in the Weinstein Company drama about the battle between George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) and rival Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) to create a sustainable electricity system and market it to the U.S.
Holland is set to play Samuel Insull, Edison’s right-hand man. Also in the movie are Katherine Waterston as Westinghouse’s wife Marguerite Erskine and Nicholas Hoult playing Nikola Tesla.
Gomez-Rejon will direct the script from Michael Mitnick wrote the script, which takes place in the late 1880s. Timur Bekmambetov will produce with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Film Rites’ Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch. Weinstein is looking to start shooting in early December, which puts it ahead of Morten Tyldum ‘s The Last Days of Night which has Eddie Redmayne starring as famed lawyer Paul Cravath, who is tasked with defending Westinghouse after Edison wins the race to the patent office and sues his rival for an unheard-of sum of $1 billion.
Holland can be seen as Spidey/Peter Parker in Homecoming which opens in theaters July 7, 2017. He also stars in the upcoming James Gray-directed The Lost City of Z opposite Charlie Hunnam.
