Toronto Film Festival Unveils First Wave of Titles, Including Jake Gyllenhaal’s “Stronger”

The Toronto International Film Festival started announcing its 2017 slate on Tuesday morning, and there will certainly be no shortage of star power north of the border.

Of the nine titles we speculated on Monday could wind up at the festival, three were officially confirmed by this initial announcement, which only represents about 25 percent of the full lineup.

Of the first-wave titles, the 10 films I’m most excited to see are Darren Aronofsky’s mother!, Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water, George Clooney’s Suburbicon, Alexander Payne’s Downsizing, Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Dee Rees’ Mudbound, David Gordon Green’s Stronger, Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’ Battle of the Sexes, Craig Gillespie’s I, Tonya and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

Of course, I’m not overlooking awards contenders like Andrew Garfield (Breathe) or Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), let alone Kevin Hart’s first real dramatic turn opposite Bryan Cranston.

I’m also excited to see Greta Gerwig’s directorial debut Lady Bird, the Weinstein Company’s awards hopeful The Current War and Scott Cooper’s Hostiles, which promises to be one of the hottest acquisition titles of the festival.

Take a look at the TIFF lineup so far, and buy your plane ticket today. Just make sure your passport is up to date first…
