“Trolls” Director Mike Mitchell Tapped for “LEGO Movie” Sequel

Everything is awesome! has found its director in , who most recently helmed the DreamWorks animation feature Trolls, the Tracking Board has confirmed. He replaces Rob Schrab who had previously been named to direct.

There’s no word on the plot for the film yet, or whether original voices like Chris Pratt as Emmet and Elizabeth Banks as Lucy will return, but original director and writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller wrote the original draft for the sequel and will also be back as producers. BoJack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg re-drafted the most recent version of the script.

Joining Lord and Miller as producers are Dan Lin and Roy Lee, who also produced the first film. Jill Wilfert is executive producing.

Clamoring for a sequel to The LEGO Movie began almost as soon as the first one was released to critical acclaim. It made nearly $470 million at the worldwide box office, with more than half of that coming from domestic ticket sales.

Mitchell is no stranger to animation. His first directing gig in the world of animation was the sequel Shrek Forever After and he then went on to helm features like Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, as well as the aforementioned Trolls. On the docket he also has the animated film Puff the Magic Dragon at Fox.
