After all the rumors circulating about the male leads for the second season of HBO’s TRUE DETECTIVE have been put to rest, it’s time for the ladies to have a shot. Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams have both been posited as possibilities for the female lead, but now Rosario Dawson, Jessica Biel, Malin Akerman, Jaimie Alexander, Brit Marling, Oona Chaplin, and Kelly Reilly are all reportedly in the running, too. The winning actress will join Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn for the sophomore season of the crime drama, which will be set in California and center on an investigation of a murdered corrupt city manager.
Although most of the contenders have had television experience, a few are more well known for their TV backgrounds than others. Biel got her start on TV playing Mary Camden on the family drama “7th Heaven” back in the 90s, while Dawson starred on sci-fi series “Gemini Division” early in her career. Akerman has starred on everything from “Children’s Hospital” to “Trophy Wife” to “The Comeback.” Alexander played Jessi on “Kyle XY,” while you’ll recognize Chaplin from her stint playing Talisa Maegyr on “Game of Thrones.” Reilly starred on ABC’s short lived drama series “Black Box.”
They’re all vying for the same role: Ani Bezzarides, a no-nonsense sheriff with a troubled childhood who struggles with gambling and alcohol addiction. It’s unclear whether anyone is a frontrunner over the others but with big screen actors and actresses making the jump to TV (or back to TV) and relative unknowns like Allison Tolman breaking onto the scene, it’s really anyone’s game at this point.
Dawson is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment. Biel is with CAA and LBI Entertainment. Akerman is repped by WME and Sanders Armstrong Caserta Management. Alexander is repped by WME and Mosaic. Marling is with CAA, while Chaplin is with Troika, Kuranda Management and Magnolia Entertainment. Reilly is repped by ICM and Troika.
