Sony’s Crackle has given a 10-episode order to drama series START UP, starring Martin Freeman, Adam Brody, Edi Gathegi, and Otmara Marrero. The hourlong series, written and executive produced by Ben Ketai, explores what happens when a brilliant, yet controversial tech idea gets incubated on the wrong side of the tracks by three strangers who don’t necessarily fit the mold of tech entrepreneurs. Shooting begins this week in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Freeman plays FBI agent Phil Rask, specializing in financial crimes. Brody plays Nick Talman, a sharp and intelligent financier at a boutique firm in Miami. Rask is after his Talman’s father, who disappears and forces Nick to stash his ill-gotten gains. Nick decides to hide the money by investing in a tech startup pitched by Izzy Morales, played by Marrero, an unorthodox tech whiz out to change the world. Gathegi plays Ronald Dacey, the second-in-command of the local Haitian gang.
Freeman (Sherlock, Fargo, The Hobbit) and Brody (The O.C., Mr & Mrs Smith) are with UTA, Gathegi (The Blacklist, Proof, Justified) is repped by ICM Partners and Framework Entertainment, and Marrero is with Innovative Artists. Ketai is repped by APA and Writ Large.
Miranda Otto has been cast as the female lead in Fox’s 24: LEGACY pilot. She will play Rebecca Ingram, the smart and confident former head of CTU who is having second thoughts about her decision to vacate her post. She joins Corey Hawkins, whose casting was announced earlier this week.
Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Kofi Siriboe, and Omar J. Dorsey will join Rutina Wesley in OWN’s new drama series QUEEN SUGAR. The series, written, directed and executive produced by Ava Duvernay, centers on Wesley’s Nova Bordelon, a formidable journalist and activist based in New Orleans. Her life, and that of her brother and their extended family, undergoes significant change when her sister, Charley, returns to Louisiana from Los Angeles to help run the family sugarcane farm.
Gardner will play Charley Bordelon West, the charismatic and savvy manager and wife of professional basketball superstar Davis West, with whom she has a challenging, conflicted relationship. Gardner, who has guested on Luke Cage, Unforgettable, and Heroes, is repped by Harden-Curtis Associates.
Siriboe will play Ralph Angel Bordelon, the youngest Bordelon sibling. Formerly incarcerated and somewhat worn out by life, Ralph Angel is trying to make a new start while raising his beloved 6-year-old son Blue with the help of family members, notably his aunt Violet. Siriboe has appeared in Whiplash, Straight Outta Compton, and recurred on MTV’s Awkward. He is repped by Innovative and J M E Management.
Dorsey will play Hollywood Desonier, a rugged, resourceful man who is dating Violet Bordelon. Dorsey, who is repped by Innovative and Aligned Entertainment, appeared in Selma, Django Unchained, and recurred on Showtime’s Ray Donovan.
Taylor Spreitler is joining Kevin James in his new comedy series at CBS. James, Rock Reuben and Bruce Helford co-wrote the comedy together, which has a 13-episode series commitment. Helford will showrun.
The untitled multi-cam comedy centers on a newly retired police officer who looks forward to spending more quality time with his wife and three kids, only to discover he faces much tougher challenges at home than he ever did on the streets. Spreitler will play Kendra, the once over-achieving, people-pleasing, daddy’s girl whose been radicalized by college and now has her own independence and point of view.
Spreitler, who is currently recurring on Hulu’s Casual, was a series regular on ABC Family’s Melissa & Joey, which wrapped its four-season run last year. She is repped by APA, Curtis Talent Management, and Coast to Coast Talent Group.
