Community alum Joel McHale is set to topline CBS’s THE GREAT INDOORS. The multi-cam comedy pilot, written by Mike Gibbons with McHale in mind for the main role, centers on Joel, an adventure reporter who must adapt to the times when he becomes the boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of the magazine. He’s an outdoorsy guy’s guy with a sardonic sense of humor, but when he’s sidelined by an injury, he’s forced to take a desk job in the publication’s digital and social media department, surrounded by a team of millennials who view him as an exotic and ancient oddity from another place and time.
McHale, who is currently recurring on Fox’s X-Files revival, starred in NBC’s (and later Yahoo’s) Community and hosted E!’s The Soup for over a decade. He’s repped by WME.
Adam Rodriguez has signed on to co-star in ABC’s CHUNK & BEAN. The pilot, from writers Ed Herro and Brian Donovan and exec producer Dave Hemingson, is a dual-family comedy centered on the unlikely friendship of two misfits, Chunk and Bean, who benefit from having two very different sets of parents living next door to each other. Rodriguez will play Jim Rogerson.
CSI: Miami alum Rodriguez has been busy lately, appearing in Magic Mike and Magic Mike XXL, as well as recurring on CW’s Jane The Virgin, Fox’s Empire, NBC’s The Night Shift, and co-starring in CBS’s summer series Reckless. He’s repped by UTA and A Management.
NBC’s THE TRAIL has landed John Lithgow and Sherri Shepherd as regulars. The docu-style single-camera comedy pilot from Jeff Astrof and Matt Miller is a spoof of series like The Jinx and Making a Murderer. The serialized comedy follows Josh Simon, a young big-city lawyer, and his oddball defense team during a high profile murder trial in a small southern town.
Lithgow will play the suspect, Larry Henderson, a smart but slightly clueless poetry professor at a South Carolina community college who is accused of murdering his wife. Henderson finds the whole notion of being charged with murder absurd, but he’s got a couple of secrets that could really derail his defense.
Shepherd will play Anne Flatch, the well-meaning and enthusiastic assistant/receptionist at Josh Simon’s makeshift law office in East Peck, South Carolina, Anne suffers from facial blindness — the inability to recognize people by their faces — along with a host of disorders that makes her job as one of the members of the defense team much more difficult.
Best known as Dick Solomon on 3rd Rock From The Sun, Lithgow has also recurred on How I Met Your Mother, voiced the White Rabbit on Once Upon A Time In Wonderland, and had a season-long arc on Dexter. He’s repped by UTA and Anonymous Content.
Shepherd, who can currently be seen in Ride Along 2, is most recognizable thanks to her stints hosting The View. Her acting credits include recurring roles on The Soul Man, 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, and Suddenly Susan. She also co-starred in Less Than Perfect opposite Sara Rue and starred in Lifetime’s Sherri. Shepherd is repped by ICM Partners and Darris Hatch Management.
Anna Diop will join Corey Hawkins and Miranda Otto in Fox’s 24: LEGACY pilot, written by 24 vets Manny Coto and Evan Katz and directed by Stephen Hopkins. Legacy chronicles military hero Eric Carter’s (Hawkins) return to the U.S. and the trouble that follows him back – compelling him to ask CTU for help in saving his life, and stopping what potentially could be one of the largest-scale terror attacks on American soil. Diop will play Nicole, Carter’s wife, a role that is expected to be significant on the level that Jack Bauer’s wife was in the original series.
Diop, who is repped by Abrams Artists Agency, has recurred on Quantico, Everybody Hates Chris, and was a series regular on the CW’s The Messengers. She can next be seen in OWN’s upcoming Greenleaf .
Ava DuVernay and Oprah’s QUEEN SUGAR has added four to the family. Tina Lifford, Dondre Whitfield, Timon Kyle Durrett, and Nicholas L. Ashe join star Rutina Wesley in the OWN drama series which chronicles the lives and loves of the estranged Bordelon siblings – Nova (Wesley), Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner) and Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe) – who come together after a family tragedy to run an ailing sugarcane farm in the Deep South.
Lifford plays Violet Bordelon, the aunt to the Bordelon siblings, a spunky woman involved in a long-term relationship with the younger Hollywood Desonier (Omar Dorsey). Lifford, repped by Pakula/King & Associates, has recurred on Parenthood, Scandal, and Minority Report.
Whitfield will play Remy Newell, a trusted friend working on the Bordelon land as a water irrigation specialist. Whitfield, who is with Don Buchwald & Associates and Alchemy Entertainment, has had arcs on Mistresses and Make It Or Break It.
Durrett is Davis West, a charismatic professional basketball player married to Charley who becomes embroiled in a public scandal with his teammates. Durrett, repped by David Shapira & Associates, has appeared on Castle, Single Ladies, and Zoe Ever After.
Natalia Cordova-Buckley has been tapped to play Slingshot on MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. The “Secret Warriors” comic book character – real name Elena Rodriguez – is a tough, streetwise Colombian woman who gains Inhuman abilities. Marvel first announced at Comic-Con that the “Secret Warriors” story would be coming to S.H.I.E.L.D.
Cordova-Buckley, repped by Spellbound Entertainment, has worked extensively in Spanish-language telenovelas and is best known to US audiences for her role in McFarland, USA.
