NETFLIX has made their move into original programming with a bang, winning a heated bidding war, and handing out a series commitment for the political thrille project HOUSE OF CARDS from writer/executive producer Beau Willimon. The series, which will also be exec produced by Kevin Spacey, David Fincher (who also directs), Eric Roth, Joshua Donen and Dana Brunetti, begins at the end of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s tenure as prime minister and follows a new young British politician with his eye on the top job. The series will be based on the novel “House of Cards” written by Michael Dobbs. While Netflix has not yet made its series model known, there is rumor of an online streaming only channel, which this deal (which could climb over $100 million) may be more a reality than ever before.
STARZ has picked up and put into development the new supernatural crime drama project THE BRINK from writers/executive producer Stephen Susco. The series, which will also be exec produced by Gore Verbinski and Jonathan Krauss, centers on art therapist Zach Taylor’s investigation into the life and madness of Martin Grace, an accused serial killer who claims to have foreseen, but not caused, his victims’ deaths. The series will be based on the interactive novel “Personal Effects: Dark Art” written by J.C. Hutchins.
TV LAND has not yet made it official, but it has begun locking up cast and creative contracts for a series order of new Fran Drescher comedy HAPPILY DIVORCED.
