Diane English will be writing an untitled multi-cam comedy centered around YouTube and “Ellen” stars Sophia Grace and Rosie. Although there is no exact plot for the show, it will see the two young Aussie stars play versions of themselves. In real life, they are known for their covers of popular songs and their red carpet reporting for Ellen DeGeneres. English is repped by ICM.
FX is developing TEXTS FROM BENNETT, a show based on the blog and subsequent book by amateur rapper Mac Lethal. The source material chronicles the various text messages Mac exchanges with his cousin Bennett, a white “gangster” with poor street sensibilities. Randall Einhorn is exec producing.
Starz is developing HEARTBEATS, written by Ben York Jones and Michael Mohan. The project centers on a man and a woman who would be perfect for each other if they lived in a different time. Doug Liman and Dave Bartis will exec produce. The writers are both repped by CAA.
The CW is developing HOURMAN, which is based on the DC superhero and centers on a pharmaceutical analyst who realizes that the visions he’s had his whole life predict catastrophic events that will happen one hour in the future. Michael Caleo (ICM) will write and executive produce with Dan Lin and Jennifer Gwartz.
Lifetime has purchased THE TRIP TO BEAUTIFUL, an adaptation of the Broadway play of the same name. It centers on a woman who tries to reconnect with her past to better her family’s future. Cicely Tyson, Bill Haber, Hallie Foote and Jeff Hayes will exec produce.
History Channel is revitalizing the acclaimed miniseries ROOTS, as they will develop an 8-hour reboot miniseries. The original follows Kunta Kinte as he was forced into slavery in America. Mark Wolper will executive produce.
Joshua Hale Fialkov will be adapting his webcomic THE BUNKER for TV. Fialkov co-wrote the comic with Joe Infurnari and it centers on five friends who find a bunker that will force them to make life-changing decisions. Fialkov is repped by WME
Ayelet Waldman’s script for THE ADVOCATE is being developed by CBS. The project centers on a doctor-turned medical advocate who makes it her duty to guarantee people the medical care they need. Waldman will executive produce with Carol Mendelsohn, Julie Weitz and Judy Smith. Waldman is with RWSG Literary Agency.
ABC has purchased an untitled medical drama based on the Spanish series “FrÃ¡giles.” The series follows a well-respected surgeon at a trauma center who, after a near-death experience, decides to help people with their physical ailments by making them confront their emotional ones. Thompson Evans is writing and executive producing with Bob Sertner, Victor Garcia and Daniel Gutman. Evans is repped by Gersh.
POMONA KINGS has been purchased by Fox. The project started as a pitch from Jaime Paglia, Marcus Wiley and James Middleton and is a “Romeo & Juliet” tale centering on two rival families, one white and one Latino, whose respective son and daughter begin a romance. The rivalry between the families is perpetuated through street racing. Paglia, Wiley and Middleton will executive produce. Paglia and Middleton are with Paradigm.
Cathy Marie Buchanan’s THE PAINTED GIRLS is being developed for TV by The CW. The proejct is set in 1880’s Paris, when decadence, sex and rug use ran rampant. Geoffrey Nauffts is writing with Dan Jinks executive producing. Nauffts is repped by CAA.
Steve and Nancy Carell are writing and executive producing TRIBECA for TBS. The project centers on the Really Heinous Crime Unit of the LAPD and the grab-bag group of people who work in it. Steve Carell is with WME.
Bruce McCulloch has written an untitled comedy that will be developed by Fox. It centers on a woman who is at the pinnacle of her career when she begins clashing with her pregnant live-in daughter. McCulloch is showrunning and exec producing with David Miner and Greg Walter. He is with UTA.
Ryan Murphy’s hit show AMERICAN HORROR STORY has been renewed by FX for a fourth season, although the backdrop for the season is unknown, as is which actors will return.
12 MONKEYS has added Natalie Chaidez as a showrunner and Jeffrey Reiner as an EP and director. Chaidez has served as a writer on “The Client List” and “Necessary Roughness” and is repped by UTA. Reiner has served as a director on the shows “Do No Harm” and “Awake” and is with WME.
