After heating up the spec market and garnering attention from studios like Sony and Fox, Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi spec MOONFALL has landed at Universal Pictures. The Independence Day: Resurgence director co-wrote the script with Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen, who made the 2015 Young & Hungry List. Emmerich, who is attached to direct, is working with Kloser and Cohen to develop a separate sci-fi pic, Singularity at Columbia Pictures. However, Moonfall is expected to be fast tracked at Universal.
The movie is described as a cross between Armageddon and, fittingly, Independence Day. When an asteroid collides with the moon, an unlikely group of misfits band together to travel to the moon and harness the alien technology left behind to stop it from colliding with the Earth.
Universal recently released Warcraft based on the popular video game. Other titles coming up on the studio’s slate include The Purge: Election Year and the highly anticipated sequels Jason Bourne and Fast 8.
Moonfall marks the seventh collaboration between Emmerich and Kloser, who has composed music for many of the director’s films. The two worked on like-minded, big-budget end-of-the-world pics such as The Day After Tomorrow, 10,000 B.C., and White House Down.
