After the spec MOTHER landed on the Tracking Board 2016 Hit List from writer Michael Green, the film was quickly set up at the Australian production company The Penguin Empire with Grant Sputore attached to direct the film, the Tracking Board has learned. Rhea Films, SLA, and Southern Light Films are also co-developing the project.
The sci-fi thriller follows a young girl being raised in a bunker by a robot “Mother.” She begins to question the intentions and motivations of her caretaker after an unexpected stranger arrives with alarming news.
Green is set to produce alongside Timothy White of Southern Light and Kelvin Munro of Penguin. Sputore will co-executive produce with Jean-Luc de Fanti, Terry Douglas, and Paris Kasidokostas-Latsis.
Besides landing on the Hit List, Green also secured a spot for himself on the 2016 Young & Hungry List. Currently, he’s developing The Revisionist with Hutch Parker Entertainment and is rewriting a project for Addictive Pictures and FilmWave.
Previously, Sputore directed the short film Legacy and has been recognized at numerous award shows and festivals, including being a finalist at 2015’s Cannes Lion. Coming up, he’s also directing the feature The Decayed and producing a handful of other projects.
