Michael Dougherty is directing the monster movie from a script he co-wrote with Zach Shields. Sources say Chandler will play a rugged zoologist and Farmiga will play his ex-wife, a paleobiologist. Stranger Things sensation Brown will play their daughter.
While plot details remain a mystery, Variety has previously speculated that original Godzilla star Ken Watanabe may be returning for the sequel, and under that logic, so might his fellow Project Monarch scientist Sally Hawkins and Navy commander David Strathairn.
Warner Bros. will release Godzilla: King of the Monsters on March 22, 2019 — one year before the mash-up movie Godzilla vs. Kong stomps into theaters on May 29, 2020. The studio is currently prepping for the release of Kong: Skull Island on March 10.
Farmiga, who earned an Oscar nomination for her role opposite George Clooney in Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air, currently stars on the A&E series Bates Motel. She also stars alongside Patrick Wilson in the hit Conjuring franchise, and previously co-starred in Martin Scorsese’s Best Picture winner The Departed.
Farmiga is currently filming Rupert Wyatt’s sci-fi thriller Captive State, and she recently wrapped the Liam Neeson movie The Commuter, which sees her reteam with Wilson. She’s represented by CAA, Authentic Talent and Literary Management and Peikoff Mahan.
