Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan is re-teaming with one of the show’s most lauded directors, Michelle MacLaren, for a limited series RAVEN based on the nonfiction book Raven: The Untold Story of Jim Jones and His People by Tim Reiterman. Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer is on board to star in and executive produce the project.
The series will focus of cult leader Jim Jones and the deadly 1978 Peoples Temple Agricultural Project known as Jonestown. The book tells the history of the group, from its idealistic beginnings to its terrible end in Jonestown, focusing on the leader Jim Jones as well as his followers. Reiterman is a survivor of the events.
Gilligan and his Sony Pictures Television-based High Bridge Productions is writing the script and will executive produce with Spencer, who landed the rights to the book with co-producer Reilly Smith. MacLaren will executive produce through her MacLaren Entertainment and direct the pilot.
Gilligan currently executive produce’s AMC’s Better Call Saul, the spinoff of his series Breaking Bad. MacLaren serves as a director for HBO’s Game of Thrones as well as AMC’s The Walking Dead. Spencer will next be seen in the film Hidden Figures.
