This was a great weekend box office across the board, with every movie in the top five making more than expected. The two new releases, “Gone Girl” and “Annabelle,” had the two highest opening weekends since “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” debuted in early August. Meanwhile, the three returning faces, “The Equalizer,” “The Boxtrolls,” and “The Maze Runner,” all kept their drops under 50 percent; “Boxtrolls,” in particular, made a very restrained 28.1 percent drop. Nevertheless, the order of the top five turned out exactly as we predicted, with “Gone Girl” just barely pulling ahead of “Annabelle” for first, and “Maze Runner” falling slightly below “Boxtrolls” for fifth. Check in later in the day for the weekend actuals.
Next week is flush with new arrivals, so competition could get tough. The erotic thriller “Addicted,” the family-friendly “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” the action fantasy “Dracula Untold,” and Robert Downey Jr.’s drama “The Judge” all bow on the 10th, and tracking has been fairly strong for all of them. It’s shaping up to be an interesting weekend, so be sure to look for our official predictions on Thursday.
