WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (07.07.14) – “TAMMY” STUMBLES AT THE BOX OFFICE

New kid on the block “Tammy” faltered a bit over the holiday weekend, getting beat out by “Transformers: Age of Extinction,” which made an impressive haul in its second week. “Tammy” opened early on Wednesday but, apparently, didn’t impress audiences who were looking for more action-packed fare. Screen Gems’ horror flick “Deliver Us From Evil” took third place, raking in just under $10 million, while the sequels “22 Jump Street” and “How To Train Your Dragon 2” rounded out the top 5. Surprisingly (or maybe not), Relativity’s family sci-fi adventure “Earth to Echo” didn’t crack the top five.

Next weekend, we have “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” and Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” to look forward to. Clearly, the two have vastly different and distinct audiences but I’m going to bet on “Apes” to come out on top with “Boyhood” in either the 3rd or 4th place slots after “Transformers.” Indie dramedy “A Long Way Down” also premieres this weekend and, even though it looks solid, I don’t think even Aaron Paul’s star power can gain traction for this one.

#1 TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION Weekend = $36.4 Million Total = $174.7 Million
