Who called it? “Lucy” and “Hercules” went head-to-head…and “Lucy” came out on top, making almost $15 million more in their opening weekends. Next down the line was “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” which raked in a respectible $16 million in its third weekend at the box office. “The Purge: Anarchy” and “Planes: Fire & Rescue” rounded out the top 5, each earning around $9 million each. It’s nice to see the family friendly “Planes” is able to hold its own against the action-packed and slightly violent fare of the rest of the summer’s movies.
Next weekend, we have the highly anticipated “Guardians of the Galaxy,” which will easily win the top spot at the box office considering the all star cast and the amount of hype surrounding the movie going in. Also premiering next weekend: “Get on Up,” the James Brown biopic from Universal, which should easily crack the top 5, if not the top 2.
