Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” wins the weekend with $65 million, beating out “Guardians of the Galaxy” in its second weekend at the box office by an impressive $20 million. That puts the “Guardians” box office total to an impressive $175 million. The Warner Bros. disaster flick “Into the Storm” earned itself third place over the weekend, raking in $18 million. The Helen Mirren foodie drama “The Hundred-Food Journey” landed itself in the fourth spot with $11 million. Last but not least, “Lucy” managed to hang on to the top 5 with $9.3 million, bringing its box office total to $97.3 million.
Next weekend is sure to be full of fan favorites, with Lionsgate’s action sequel “The Expendables 3” hitting theaters along with the adaptation of the children’s classic “The Giver,” as well as action/comedy “Let’s Be Cops.” It’s hard to know where the numbers will fall next weekend. “The Giver” is a project that could make anyone nostalgic for middle school but audiences haven’t been very receptive to the sci-fi look of the adaptation. “The Expendables 3” could get action fans into the theaters but with “TMNT” and “Guardians” both dominating the theaters, “Expendables 3” might be old news. “Let’s Be Cops” has gotten some good early buzz but, again, with “TMNT” and “Guardians” both in the running, who knows how well the comedy is likely to do.
