WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (10.20.14) — “Fury” Vents Its Wrath on the Box Office

by: , Contributor

Well, the results are in, and to no one’s surprise, Fury won the weekend. It did so by somewhat less than expected, though, pulling in an estimated $23.5 million — about $3 million less than Gone Girl made last week, in its second weekend. Gone Girl, for its part, held on to second place, with only a 32 percent drop from last weekend. Meanwhile, The Book of Life and The Best of Me respectively over- and under-performed our predictions by about $2 million, but as expected, they took the #3 and #5 spots.

The real surprise this weekend was Dracula Untold, which dropped significantly from $23.5 million to $10 million, pushing it out of the top five altogether. We’d predicted a fall, but not this steep of one; it looks like the lackluster reviews did Dracula more harm than anticipated. (Fury‘s male-skewing audience probably didn’t help, either.) In its place, Alexander took fourth, with a relatively modest drop of 34 percent from its first week.

Next week, John Wick will try to fill the Keanu Reeves-shaped hole in our hearts, and Ouija arrives to take the October Halloween crown from Annabelle. Check in Thursday to see our predictions!

#1 Weekend = $23.5 Million Total = $23.5 Million
#2 Weekend = $17.8 Million Total = $107.069 Million
#3 Weekend = $17 Million Total = $17 Million
#4 ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY Weekend = $12.039 Million Total = $36.871 Million
#5 Weekend = $10.2 Million Total = $10.2 Million
