I’m pinch hitting this week for our regular box office maven Madelyn for what turned out to be quite a surprising weekend. Interstellar didn’t do nearly as well as we (or anyone else) predicted, taking second chair to Big Hero 6 in its opening weekend. Hero did about as well as expected, raking in just over $56 million, which put Interstellar at a fairly close second with $50 million. Everything else seemed to be a bit of a toss-up over the weekend, with Gone Girl staying strong in the top 5 with $6.1 million, putting it in third place and the horror film Ouija landing just behind in fourth place with $6 million. St. Vincent had a solid take this weekend, too, with $5.7 million, just barely edging Nightcrawler out of the top 5.
So what’s on for next week? Not much. Universal’s long awaited sequel Dumb and Dumber To hits theaters along with Relativity’s drama Beyond the Lights starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Minnie Driver. Interstellar and Big Hero 6 are sure to do well at least for the next couple of weekends but luckily Madelyn should be back later in the week for her “official” predictions.
