We broke the news last October that Peter Chernin was setting up MATCH MAKER, the story about the legendary 1973 battle of the sexes tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs that will be based on Don Van Natta Jr.’s ESPN magazine article, “The Match Maker: Bobby Riggs, the Mafia and the Battle of the Sexes.” Now Will Ferrell has attached himself to star as Bobby Riggs.
Ferrell is the perfect guy for this role as I am sure there will be humor elements to the story while still having dramatic aspects as well. I liked Ferrell’s past films that were not totally cheeseball-crazy like, “Everything Must Go” or more specifically “Stranger Than Fiction.” Hopefully this project will fall somewhere in this arena, as it is a story that deserves some serious attention.
Ferrell was last seen in “Anchorman 2: the Legend Continues” and lent his voice to “The Lego Movie.” He is currently working on “Get Hard.”
