In one of the biggest projects to hit the market in Cannes so far, Will Ferrell will star in CAPTAIN DAD opposite Catherine Keener and Michael Cera in a story being pitched as a dark twist on the traditional family vacation comedy. Written and to be directed by Golden Globe nominee Sebastian Silva, the film will be produced by Anne Carey through her Archer Gray Productions with Killer Films’ Christine Vachon serving as executive producer.
The movie centers around a father of six (Ferrell) who gives his wife (Keener) the birthday present of a lifetime: a trip through the Caribbean on a sailboat with the entire family – including the kids and their significant others. But as “Captain Dad” refuses to come to terms with the fact that he can’t really sail, his ‘father knows best’ attitude begins to clash with the rest of the family.
UTA Independent Film Group put the package together, the news of which offers Ferrell a welcome reprieve from the recent firestorm triggered over his attachment to the controversial Reagan – a project Ferrell has subsequently dropped.
Silva has had a strong career as a 1st AD and second unit director for films such as Terence Malick’s Knight of Cups, Lee Daniels’ The Butler, and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Babel. His previous directorial effort, The Maid – which he co-wrote with Pedro Peirano – was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009.
Ferrell is repped by UTA and Mosaic.
Keener is repped by Gersh.
Cera is repped by Thruline and ICM Partners.
Silva is repped by UTA.
