Will Smith announced today on his Facebook page that he will be hosting the National Geographic event series One Strange Rock, which will be exec. produced by Darren Aronofsky. Smith’s announcement was accompanied by a teaser video, which you can watch below.
The 10-episode series will tell the story of Earth and why it’s teaming with life compared to other planets. The series is anchored by a group of astronauts, including Canada’s Chris Hadfield and Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman to go into space on the space shuttle Endeavour, who give their own perspective of the planet as they’ve seen it from space.
The series is produced by Nutopia, Protozoa Pictures and Smith’s Overbrook Entertainment with Aronofsky as the series executive producer along with Nutopia CEO Jane Root, Ari Handel, Peter Lovering, Scott Franklin, Tim Pastore and Matt Renner. Arif Nurmohamed will co-executive produce.
“I am thrilled to have Will Smith on board to guide our series,” Aronofsky said in a press release for the series. “His charisma, intelligence and humanity will add greatly to the project, helping welcome viewers into this unique narrative about the mind-blowing wonders that make life on Earth possible.”
Smith and Aronofsky are both repped by CAA.
