Denis Villeneuve’s thriller Sicario was one of my favorite films of 2015, and you can feel its influence all over the trailer for WIND RIVER. This makes sense, of course, since they both hail from the dark mind of Taylor Sheridan.
Sheridan may have missed out on a well-deserved Oscar nomination for Sicario, but he did earn one the following year for Hell or High Water, and now he’s making his directorial debut with Wind River, which the Weinstein Company will release on Aug. 4.
The wintry crime thriller finds Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen teaming back up to investigate a murder on a Native American reservation.
Like Sicario, it features a female FBI agent working alongside a man with a haunted past, and that droning soundtrack also sounds familiar. There’s another similarity too. A more important one. This film also looks fantastic.
Hell or High Water‘s Gil Birmingham co-stars along with Graham Greene, Jon Bernthal and Martin Sensmeier, who stood out in The Magnificent Seven remake. Just saying!
Wind River earned strong reviews out of Sundance and it was also welcomed into the Cannes Film Festival. The movie may open against higher-profile competition in The Dark Tower and Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit, but if it’s any good, it should manage to hold its own for an indie and have legs through Labor Day weekend.
