Launch Pad writer Louise Ransil was featured in a fascinating Los Angeles Times cover story over the weekend, centering on her script, Marlowe. The article, “Finding Marlowe,” attempts to unravel the mystery behind the story Ransil wrote in her spec. Ransil’s script centers on real-life P.I. Samuel Marlowe, the first black licensed P.I. in California, who worked with classic noir authors Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, and was allegedly an inspiration for their famous characters — notably, Philip Marlowe himself. Marlowe was a top ten finalist in the 2013 Launch Pad Features Competition.

The article, by our friend Daniel Miller, is the first in a series of stories on Marlowe that will be coming out daily this week in the L.A. Times. Currently, you can read about Marlowe’s great-grandson’s search for clues in the P.I.’s former thrift shop, see a map of the L.A. areas that Marlowe frequented, and watch video of a conversation between Miller and Ransil. The main article is also accompanied by some truly stunning illustrations. Whether you’re interested in the entertainment industry, the history of L.A., or just a good old-fashioned detective story, it’s definitely worth a look.
