After being personally selected as the Overall Winner of the 2016 Launch Pad Manuscript Competition by Ridley Scott and Scott Free, newcomer Danny Newell has signed with Energy Entertainment manager Brooklyn Weaver, the Tracking Board has exclusively learned.

Described as The Hunger Games meets The Purge, Newell’s manuscript tells the story of what happens when all the parents of a remote island community begin to murder their children for no apparent reason, and the 17-year old girl who must fight to save her younger brothers from the people who are supposed to love and protect them.

After landing the top spot in the competition, Filicide not only landed a publishing deal from Inksshares, but it also gained immediate interest as a potential film and TV adaptation from Weaver, Romark Entertainment’s Rock Shaink and Bates Motel creator/writer Anthony Cipriano.

Growing up on the coast of North Carolina, Newell received a BA in Journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill before relocating to Los Angeles, where he currently works as a writer. With eight years of experience writing, and paying the bills via post-production jobs, Newell is now focused full-time on preparing his book for release, and bringing to life his next series.

Weaver is no stranger to the Launch Pad Competitions, having served as a judge for every single competition and signed nearly a dozen writers from them. Weaver’s clients include Deadpool creator Rob Liefield, Brad Inglesby (Out of the Furnace, Run All Night), Mickey Fisher (Extant, Reverie) and Mark Mallouk (Black Mass). Weaver’s produ ing credits include Out of the Furnace, Run All Night and Extant, as well as the upcoming pilots A God in the Shed for Skydance Productions and Akiva Goldsman’s Weed Road Pictures, and the Amblin TV pilot Reverie for NBC.

Exclusive partners Michael De Luca, Brooklyn Weaver, Rock Shaink and Inkshares will kick off The 2017 Launch Pad Manuscript Competition on Friday, March 31.
