Disney breakout star Auli’i Cravalho is going from the waves of Polynesia to the hallways of high school. Deadline is reporting that the 16-year-old Moana star has signed on as the lead DRAMA HIGH, a pilot from Friday Night Lights executive producer Jason Katims and Jeffrey Seller.
The pilot written by Katims was inspired by a book by the same name about Lou Volpe, a groundbreaking drama teacher who changed the lives of his students. The book was written by one of his former students, Michael Sokolove. The hourlong project will follow the source material as a high school drama department come alive under a passionate teacher and family man whose dedication to the program inspires an entire town. The pilot will mark Cravalho’s first foray into television. She is set to play one of the students, Lilette, where she will be able to utilize her singing talents.
Seller also produced the Broadway mega-hit Hamilton created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, who Cravalho worked with on Moana,. Seller has also signed on to executive produce alongside Flody Suarez via Seller Suarez Productions. Universal TV, where both True Jack and Seller Suarez are under overall deals, is the studio. Katims and Michelle Lee will also executive produce through True Jack Productions.
She is repped by CESD.
