Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story is renewed for a third season ahead of the filming of season two, while CBS axes the political supernatural satire BrainDead and the family drama American Gothic after one season.

American Gothic closes out its mystery with solid storytelling, great artistic choices, and an extraordinary performance in the finale two-parter: “Madame X” and “Whistlers Mother.”

I kept expecting Garrett to attack Brady, instead, he just gave him a detailed account of who the skeleton belonged to, why Garrett knew exactly where to find it and why he was destroying it.
American Gothic offers a new plot twist heading into “The Veteran in a New Field.” Detective stories have a great tradition of going out guns blazing, but this show has more in common with the slasher; there might be a showdown, but the killer’s demise isn’t always set.
American Gothic has a great sense of timing. The last episode was highly stylized with visual composition, others have leaned on humor; “The Oxbow” is a more straightforward dramatic tone and it works for showing us a lot of Garrett’s backstory.
American Gothic explores the difference Mrs. Right can make in the bad boy’s life with “Kindred Spirits.” This week was a lot of fun on and off screen. Director Lexi Alexander brought a lot of style to “Kindred Spirits,” the story performs on a whole different level.
American Gothic crosses the midpoint of its mystery with “The Gross Clinic.” It is common in the second act of a detective story to get the “who” and the “how” questions answered. The “why” is often answered last.
