The story follows three refugees from East Prussia as they struggle to survive during the end of WWII. They believe the ship Wilhelm Gustloff can take them to safety, but just as freedom seems within their grasp, tragedy strikes and the ship sinks, resulting in one of the worst maritime disasters ever.
