While the team at Annapurna has loved this project since the company first became involved with it several years ago, sources say Megan Ellison was wary about financing the film, given the hit the company took on Kathryn Bigelow’s underperforming drama Detroit.
THE TRUE AMERICAN
Kathryn Bigelow was previously set to direct the film, which once had Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed attached to star. Bigelow is now producing alongside Annapurna’s Megan Ellison and Matthew Budman, as well as director Pablo Larrain’s producing partner Juan de Dios Larraín.
The last we heard, this project was being developed as a starring vehicle for Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed, but anything could happen with a new director at the helm, and neither actor was mentioned in Annapurna’s press release.
Logline: Based on the true story of self proclaimed “Arab slayer” Mark Stroman who murdered two immigrants in Texas days after the September 11th attacks. A third man survived being shot in the head and worked to keep his attacker from being executed.
