WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (05.19.14) – “Godzilla” Crushes Everything In Its Path!

“Godzilla” opened this weekend in #1 with $93.2 million, and although everyone was expecting the movie to take the top spot, I don’t think many thought it would earn more than triple the amount of the second position. Taking that position was “Neighbors” who brought in another $25.9 million. What is interesting is that “Neighbors” has made less than “Godzilla” in two weeks, but was able to earn triple its budget in its opening weekend, while “Godzilla” still has a ways to go to break even. Just something to think about. Meanwhile, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is hanging in there at #3 with $16.8 million, and new comer “Million Dollar Arm” took #4 with $10.5 million. Finally in #5 is “The Other Woman” who has enjoyed a 4th weekend in the top 5, bringing in another $6.3 million.

Next week should be interesting with the release of “X-Men: Days Of Future Past,” which has already been getting positive reviews, and the new Sandler/Barrymore comedy “Blended.” “X-Men” will certainly take #1 and I feel safe calling “Godzilla” number #2, but the rest of the top five could be interesting. This is just a gut feeling, but I will put “Blended” at #3 “Neighbors” at #4 and “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” in the final spot. But only time will tell.
