WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (07.21.14) – “Apes” Continue to Dominate the Planet

0

Looks like apes really do rule the world…or at least the box office. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” took the top spot again this weekend, bringing in a respectable $36 million, leaving “The Purge: Anarchy,” “Planes: Fire & Rescue” and “Sex Tape” in its dust in their opening weekends. “The Purge” sequel took second place, earning just over $28 million, almost double that of racy rom-com “Sex Tape,” which landed in fourth place. Between the two was the animated “Planes” sequel, which brought in $18 million, beating out “Sex Tape” by $3 mil. Last but not least, “Transfomers” dropped to the fifth spot this weekend with $10 million in its fourth weekend at the box office.

Next weekend, we can look forward to action flicks “Hercules” and “Lucy,” starring The Rock and Scarlett Johansson, respectively. So who is going to come out on top in a boys vs. girls duel? My bet is on “Lucy.” I can see more women willing to watch Scar Jo kick some ass and take some names and you can bet their male counterparts want to see that, too. Sorry, Dwayne.

#1 DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Weekend = $36 Million Total = $138.9 Million
