I really liked Michael Dowse’s 2012 hockey comedy Goon, and while it’s taken far too long for a sequel to take the ice, I’m glad that GOON: LAST OF THE ENFORCERS will soon skate into theaters, as evidenced by the new trailer that was released Tuesday by Momentum Pictures.
Seann William Scott returns to star as Doug “The Thug” Glatt, and joining him is Jay Baruchel, who actually stepped in to direct the sequel.
This time around, Doug is now the captain of the Halifax Highlanders, and he’s contending with a hotshot young teammate named Anders Cain (Wyatt Russell), who punched Doug’s lights out just he joined the team. Doug is forced to ask his old rival Ross Rhea (Liev Schreiber) to teach him how to fight with his left hand, and defend his honor in the process. And on top of that, he’s about to become a father too.
The sequel has big skates to fill, but it looks like it features the same mix of laughs, hockey violence and good old-fashioned sports movie emotion. This green-band trailer only hints at the more R-rated bits in the movie, which hits select theaters and VOD on Sept. 1.
Watch for a quick peek at T.J. Miller’s SportsCenter-like anchor, who I’m sure will unleash a handful of choice one-liners that rhyme with “puck.”
