Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Ocean’s 8, the relaunch/reboot of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 11 with an all-female cast, but what a cast it is! Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett and Anne Hathaway are three of the main players in this heist comedy directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), based on a script by Olivia Milch and Ross.
The film also stars Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna and rapper/comedian Awkwafina, and also has James Corden and Richard Armitage as part of the cast, plus possibly a few cameos?
The first trailer makes it fairly evident that the big heist job this time is to steal expensive jewelry from the annual Met Gala in New York City, which already gives the movie a very different look and feel from the Vegas-set Soderbergh films.
The original Ocean’s 11 was somewhat unique in that it brought together some of the top A-list stars of the time like George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon. The original Ocean’s 11 trilogy grossed $1.1 billion worldwide across three movies released between 2001 and 2007.
It’s been ten years since Ocean’s Thirteen, and the trailer makes it look like the casting choices were sound ones, because it looks like a similarly fun and funny comedic heist movie with a group of very funny women. Hopefully, the movie won’t be as divisive as Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot last year.
Ocean’s 8 will be released on June 8, 2018.
