Seeso has picked up the half-hour scripted comedy pilot SHRINK to series from creators Tim Baltz and Ted Tremper. Baltz, a Second City alum who also appears in Seeso’s Bajillion Dollar Propertie$, will star in the series which Tremper will direct. The project was previously in development at Pivot – Participant Media’s now defunct TV network.
Shrink stars Baltz as a recent medical school graduate who loses his residency and finds himself unemployed with a half million dollars of student loan debt. With his dream of becoming a “real doctor” dashed, he discovers a loophole to becoming a therapist by recording 1,920 supervised clinical hours, which he begins by soliciting unorthodox patients from Craigslist and conducts the free sessions in his parent’s garage.
Shrink won Best Comedy Pilot and the Critics’ Choice Award at the NYTVF in 2012, after which Patrick Daly helped team Baltz and Tremper with Arrested Development writer Chuck Martin.
Seeso, NBCUniversal’s comedy subscription service, has been building its original content over the past few years, including The UCB Show, HarmonQuest, and the aforementioned Propertie$. In addition to original content, Seeso offers classic episodes of Saturday Night Live, Monty Python, and for a $3.99 monthly fee.
Baltz, Tremper, and Daly will executive produce with Jon Stern and Abominable Pictures. Emily Wilson will write and Martin will serve as showrunner. The series is expected to start shooting in Chicago this fall.
