The first photos of the upcoming sequel X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX has been revealed. Longtime X-Men writer and producer Simon Kinberg makes his directorial debut, revealing in a a recent Entertainment Weekly article that Jennifer Lawrence encouraged him to make the jump to the director’s chair. Kinberg also wrote the script that adapts the iconic Dark Phoenix Saga comic book arc.

Some plot details have also been revealed, as Kinberg states the film ventures into space in the opening sequence. This is where Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey gets hit by a solar flare that awakens the Phoenix and sparks the conflict that will play out through the film.

Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, James Fassbender, Nicholas Hoult, and Evan Peters are all returning for the film, even though their contracts expired after Apocalypse. This gives me great hope for the film, if these incredibly busy A-list actors wanted to come back for this film, I think it has a very promising script.

These images also give us our first look at Jessica Chastain as Lilandra, who plays an otherworldly shapeshifter, who plays a major role in the comic arc.
